Operation Market Garden

This is a gouache painting of the now iconic raid undertaken by 1st Airborne Division in September 1944 when they landed behind enemy lines to take control of bridges crossing the Rhine. The Douglas Dakota and the Airspeed Horsa glider were used to secure the landing sites and following landing to move towards the German positions. The Airspeed Glider was produced in large numbers by a de Havilland subsidiary company and an example fuselage is on display at The de Havilland Museum in London Colney near St. Albans.
